(coordinated by Prof. Stefania Barca, Research Unit of the University of Santiago de Compostela of the JUST2CE project).

1st session (9-13:30h): Barriers and drivers to a sustainable WEEE management system in Campania in the transition towards a just and inclusive circular economy.

Research Unit of the Parthenope University – JUST2CE project

The first session of the National Workshop aims to bring together all the main actors and stakeholders of the WEEE sector of Campania Region, with the aim of sharing the results of the case study focused on the analysis of the WEEE management system. During two roundtables the participant will be invited to debate the main obstacles and drivers to the collection and recycling, solutions, the good practices adopted, the importance of integrating and promoting a WEEE management system which, in addition to generating positive economic benefits, should also be directed towards an environmentally and socially just and inclusive in line with the objectives of the JUST2CE Project.

–  2nd session (14:30-19h): Scenarios of a just transition in Taranto and industrial contaminated sites

Research Unit of the of the Centro de Estudos Sociais JUST2CE project

The objective of this round table is to open a debate on the governance and transition processes towards restorative economies of the Italian contaminated industrial sites, discussing policy proposals and actions to foster change, with a focus on the role of community engagement and leadership.

Starting from the lessons learned from the JUST2CE research on the case of Taranto, a mono-industrial town developed around a linear economic model, centered on the steel industry ex-Ilva, causing serious environmental and social impacts, we gather the contribution of scholars, research institutes, workers and citizens engaged in the elaboration of transition scenarios and significant experiences of participatory processes. Grassroots initiatives, genuine engagement and leadership of community organisations, informal groups, workers and inhabitants affected by decision-making are key to expressing the visions of disadvantaged and negatively impacted communities, responding to their needs, aspirations and rights, crafting distributive and regenerative systems, creating durable institutions and impacting on social habits, therefore contributing to the real transition towards more just societies.
